This area has previously been disturbed and it appears that reclamation should be addressed to return the
landscape to the neaz pre-disturbance conditions.
It does not appear any Threatened or Endangered wildlife reside in the area although it is part of a lazger riparian
complex that provides severe winter range to deer and elk and supports winter bald eagle roost sites along the
Purgatoire Rivet The site specific evaluation does not show the tazge flee component necessary for these birds,
however.
We would offer the following recommendations for incorporation into the permit:
• Considerations for implementation and reclamation should account for proper drainage and sloping of road cuu. Slopes
should be seeded with a native seed mix and monitored for successful vegetation establishment.
• A stockpile of topsoil should be set aside for reclamation purposes. 'I'bis stockpile should also be temporarily seeded to
minimise. erosion losses, and then spread over the affected area prior to seeding with native grasses, forts, and shrubs.
• It is recommended that livestock be excluded from the site until such torte as the site is released and the bond returned.
• A noxious weed plan should also be developed and implemented to eliminate the establishment of invasive noxious weeds
throughout the mining and reclamation period.
• Replace any fence removal with `wildlife friendly fence' (i.e. 42 inch maximum height with 12" spacing between top two
wires and 16 inch spacing from ground to bottom wire) to facilitate unimpeded movement of deer/elk
Thank you for providing us this opportunity to comment. We hope these suggestions assist you in minimizing impacts
and facilitating rapid and successful reclamation. If you have any questions please wntact District Wildlife Manger
Bob Holder at (719) 680-1410 for assistance.
S' rely,
erem~ s
Acting Area Wildlife Manager
Colorado Division of Wildlife
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Hams D.
