<br />No excavation shall be made in frozen material without written approval of <br />the Engineer. No additional allowance above the unit prices per cubic yard . <br />bid in the schedule for excavation will be made on account of any materials <br />being wet or frozen. <br />B. Excess Excavation <br />If <br />Any and all excess excavation for the convenience of the Contractor, or <br />over-excavation performed by the Contractor for any purpose or reason <br />except as may be ordered in writing by the Engineer, and whether or not due <br />to the fault of the Contractor, shall be at the expense of the Contractor. <br />Where required to complete the work all such excess excavation and over- <br />excavation shall be refilled with materials furnished and placed at the <br />expense of and by the Contractor. <br />3.05 Structural Excavating and Trenching <br />A. General <br />i <br />f <br />~_ <br />All excavation of every description and of whatever substance encountered <br />shall be performed as required by the lines and grades indicated on the plans. <br />Where no specific limits of excavation for structures or trenches are called <br />for, the excavation shall be accomplished in accordance with standard <br />practices pertinent to the work being performed. The excavation shall be <br />held to the minimum required for proper performance of the work. <br />However, if in the opinion of the Engineer additional excavation is required <br />to properly perform the work, this additional excavation may be required. <br />Where excavation is being performed in unstable materials subject to <br />sioughing or "cave-in", the Contractor shall provide and use whatever <br />sheeting, shoring or cribbing as may be required to properly protect the work <br />and insure safe working conditions. Where excavation requires "blasting" or <br />other hazardous operations, the Contractor shall exercise due care to <br />protect all adjacent property, both public and private, and shall protect the <br />Owner from all claims resulting from these operations. <br />All stitable material removed from the excavations shall be used, insofar as <br />possible, in the formation of embankments, fills, backfilling, and for such <br />other purposes as are called for on the plans or directed by the Engineer. <br />Material deemed unsuitable for these purposes shall be disposed of on the <br />site as called for on the plans or directed by the Engineer. <br />The Contractor is expected to familiarize himself completely with the type <br />of excavation to be performed and the type of material to be handled. <br />3.06 Backfi7ling Around Structures <br />• <br />A. General <br />I~ <br />Backfi7ling around structures shall be accomplished using only earth <br />materials subject to the restrictions on materiel type indicated on the <br />Drawings.
