placed in the enbankment, whether from the excavation of other parts of the •
work or from borrow areas shall be placed in the location approved by the
Engineer and the Contractor shall be entitled to no additional allowance
above the prices in the bid schedule on account of this requirement.
The earth fill portions of the embankment and earth fill placed for structure
foundations shall be constructed in accordance with the provisions of this
-- section.
No material shall be placed in any section of the earth-filled portion of the
embankment until the foundation for the section has been dewatered and
_ suitably prepared and has been approved by the Engineer. The foundation
for the earth fill shall be prepared by leveling and rolling so that the surface
material of the foundation will be compact and well bonded with the first
r- layer of earth fill as herein specified for the subsequent layers of the earth
fill. The surfaces of each portion of the foundation, immediately prior to
placing the earth fill, shall have all water removed from depressions and
i shall be properly moistened and sufficiently clean to obtain a suitable bond
with the earth fill.
_ The distribution and gradation of the materials throughout the earth fill
shall be as du•ected and shall be free from lenses, pockets, streaks, or layers
-. of material differing substantially in texture or gradation from the sur-
rounding material, or compaction lenses or track lenses. The combined
excavation and placing operation shall be such that the material when com- •
I_ pacted in the earth fill will be blended sufficiently to secure the best
practical degree of compaction and stability. Successive loads of material
~-- shall be dumped on the earth fill so as to produce the best practical
L distribution of the materiels, subject to the approval of the Engineer, and
for this purpose the Engineer may designate the locations in the earth fill
L where the individual loads shall be deposited.
Cobbles and rock fragments having maximum dimensions of more than five
inches shall not be placed in the earth fill. The material shall be placed in
the earth fill in continuous, approximately horizontal layers not more than
~ six inches in thickness after being rolled as herein specified.
~- If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the surface of the prepared foundation or
~ the rolled surface of a layer of earth fill is too dry, or too smooth to bond
'-' properly with the next layer of material, it is to be scarified 6 inches
_ moistened to near optimum and recompacted to 95% of Standard Proctor
Density to provide a satisfactory bonding surface before the next succeeding
,-- layer of earth fill material is placed. If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the
roller surface of any layer of earth fill in place is too wet for proper
~ compaction of the layer of earth fill material to be placed thereon, it shall
L be removed, allowed to dry, or worked with a harrow, scarifier or other
suitable equipment to reduce the water content to the required amount, Yhen
it shall be recompacted for the next succeeding layer of earth fill material
_ to be placed.
~J
02200-7
1
