FOREIdARD
• Archaeology Report
Anthropology Department, Ft. Lewis College
Durango, Colorado
Atlantic Richfield Company is currently planning the development
of its Mt. Gunnison Nine--an underground coal mine near Somerset,
Colorado. Baseline environmental studies on the property began in
late 1975. The Mining and Reclamation Plan was submitted to the
U.S. Geological Survey !n August 1975. This archaeological study is
a part of those baseline studies and necessary for approval of the
Hining and Reclamation Plan.
To date Atlantic Richfield Company has phased its development
activities into two parts. The first phase was the development of
the Sylvester Gulch Teat Adit in late 1975--an F-seam bulk sample
coal operation. The second phase will be the development of the
Mt. Gunnison Mine some time in the near future. Dr. Susan Applegarth
of the Ft. Lewis College Anthropology Department has performed the
archaeological surveys oa areas subject to disturbance by both of
these operations. This report covers both of those survey efforts.
The Sylvester Gulch survey was approved by the State Archaeologist
prior to initiation of the Test Adit activities. The Mt. Gunnison
Mine facilities survey will be forwarded to [he Slate Archaeologist
and State Historical Society for their review. Only two sites.
both historical in nature, were discovered, 14ta State Historical
Society has previously indicated that neither site warranted pre~er-
vation efforts, Nevertheless this report will be submitted for
ii
