C. Campbell, Reclamation Specialist
Re; File if 79-166, Gravel Operation, James W. Mowbray; Delta, Colorado.
Dear Mr. Campbell,
Please add this report to Mr. Mowbray's previous application.
Pit Name; Mowbray Gravel Pit
Location; Legal, Part of NW ; of SE ', of Sect. 11; T155; R96W; 6th PM.
Area Site; Approximately 1 mile west of North Delta Community.
Size; Approximately 7 to 10 acres to be mined in a 14 to 17 acre tract.
Present Use; Rangeland and a gravel pit.
Present plants; 20% Cottonwood Trees, 15% Willows, 5% Quackgrass, 5% Cattails,
5% Salt Cedar Trees, 5% Russian Olive Trees, 10% Sweetclover, 10% Smooth
Bromegrass, 15% Western Wheatgrass, 5% Fox tail Grass, 5% Annual Weeds and
Forbs, and traces of Common Marsh grass and Bull Rush.
Soils; Al, Alluvial wetland, 0-8% slope, somewhat poorly to very poorly drained.
Top Soil, 0-48" of loamy to gravelly soil.
% gravel greater then lZ", est. 30%.
Gravel depth; 4 to 10 ft.
Soil under gravel; Shale.
4later table; at or near the surface.
Flood plain; Subject to yearly flooding.
Precipitation; 8 to 10 average annual precipitation zone.
Re-vegetation; On the island and tree areas, do nothing as these are already
well covered with the above listed vegetation.
On the gravel pit side slopes, shape to about a 3:1 slope and seed 12 to 14
pounds of Western Wheatgrass and Smooth Bromegrass in a 50-50 mixture. No
extra top soil will be needed here as this is in the layer of loamy to
gravelly soil.
Below this layer will be the water table in the gravel zone so this portion
of the excavated area will need no re-vegetation treatment. It will be
desirable to keep the gravel slopes at 2:1 or steeper below the water line
to have a minimum shallow pond edge for water loving weeds.
If you have any questions concerning this report, please contact us.
Sincerely, ~<~~ ~~"O
Paul IJillis, Vice-President, Delta Soil Conservation District
cc; James W.
