REVEGETATION GUIDELINES (CONTINUED)
page 2
1. 47eed and seed free grass hay or grain straw should be used at an
application rate of 4,000 lbs. per acre of air dry material.
At least 5G~ of the mulch by wiight shall be 10 inches or more in
length. Anchor mulch immediately after distributing with mulch
crimper (straight disc).
~~
2. Application of feedlot or barnyard manure must be of a type that has
60$ or more, by weight, heavy chunks 5 inches or more in diameter.
The minimum rate of application shall be 30 tons per acre immediat ly
before or after seeding. `
3• Mulch netting. Netting must be firmly held in place with pins spaced
not more than 10 linear feet apart. In sandy or extremely loose soil
locate pins closer.
4. Asphalt
5. Jute Netting
6. Excelsior mat ~~
7. Wood chips
5. Defer seeded area from all use be livestock for at least a tuo year period
--until grass is established. This may require fencing of the
critical area.
SEEDBED PREPARATION FOR VERY STEEP SLOPES
.`..._
1. Cut ridges, diversions or channels across slope to catch excessive water
on slope and divert it off of disturbed area. Spacing of these will depend on
degree of slope and intensity of rain. The steeper the slope, the greater the
intensity of rains the closer the ridges, diversions or channels. Broadcast
seed and drag, spike tooth harrow, chain logs, anything that will scarify soil
and cover seed with some soil.
2. Run bulldozer with tracks up and down slope. The track trill leave de-
pressions perpendicular to the slope. These depressions will catch the seed i,,,,~
that is broadcast, hold any precipltation on the slope and help control the
movement of soil off the disturbed area. Broadcast seed before equipment goes
over area for this final operation. The movement of the equipment will tend to ~
cover seed with soil.
3• Leave area without the final smoothing operation. Leave the surface rough
with ridges and depressions. This will slow the runoff down to allow it to
percolate into soil and reduce erosion. Broadcast seed and drag, spike tooth
harrow, chai^ logs, anything that will scarify soil and cover seed with some
soil.
4. If site is to extreme for these practices broadcast seed over area and
cover with mulch or net will be needed. Composted wood chips mulch is very
cell suited for mountain sites, since a supply of chips is readily available
in these areas. These will help reduce .erosion and loss of soil moisture
through evaporation.
