• of the slopes determined no remediation techniques were required. The monitoring technique for
the at risk slopes will be selected based on the slope configuration and the remediation technique
employed. Monitoring techniques may include site lines, survey monuments, drain monitoring or
visual monitoring.
Three inclinometers were constructed in borings 10, 18 and 23. The inclinometers were installed
by Maxim between May 29'" and June 7, 1996. The inclinometers will be monitored and results
reported to the DMG according to the following schedule:
1. Readings were taken on June 13, 1996 for the purpose of establishing a baseline
set of data.
2. Readings were taken on August 14, 1996 to confirm the baseline data. No
significant displacement was noted.
3. Readings will betaken in the fall of each year to establish a baseline for the spring
measurement.
4. Readings will be taken in the spring of each year during May or Tune. If
displacement is noted the DMG will be notified and the frequency of monitoring
will be determined in joint consultation with the DMG. At a minimum, the
inclinometers will be monitored monthly until no significant displacement is
measured and the slopes azejudged to be stable.
5. If no displacement is noted in the May or June reading, no further inclinometer
monitoring will be performed until the fall of the yeaz.
Geotechnical Laboratory Testing - Proposed Gob Pile
A geotechnical laboratory testing report (Tab 5) was prepazed to determine strength pazameters
for the gob pile design. This report was prepazed because the DMG did not accept BRL's
position that blow count corcelations are an acceptable means to derive strength parameters for
the gob pile design. Therefore, BRL had Maxim perform some material tests. The following
table presents the results of Maxim's test and Westec's derived strength parameters.
Westec Maxim
Westec Material Phi Cohesion psf Phi Cohesion psf
2 Colluvial Sandstone 36 0 32 900
3 Mancos Shale 20 2000 12 1100
4 Fill 25 150 36 Z00
WESTEC conducted additional geotechnical investigations at the site on January 24, 1997. The tazget
material for the investigation was Mancos shale. See the discussion below and WESTEC's report
presented in Tab 8.
•
-4- 2/13/97
