pinyon juniper woodland predominant on the steep, rocky slopes of the Bookcliffs in the
mine portal area and along the upper access road. Some of the semi-desert communities
support a significant introduced winter annual component (e.g. downy brome, annual
wheatgrass, storks bill etc.), but the presence of these species does not appear to be due to
any past farming activity on the proposed permit area.
Although it seems evident that the proposed permit area does not include any areas of
prime farmland, I am requesting NRCS input, because of the requirement under Rule
2.04.12, that the Division consult with NRCS to determine the nature and extent of the
prime farmland investigation. Please provide a written response indicating whether you
concur, based on knowledge of the site and available information that the permit area
does not include prime farmland and that further investigation is not necessary. If you
believe that further investigation may be warranted, please advise regarding the nature
and extent of additional investigation that you would recommend.
Please contact me at the Division's Grand Junction Office (970) 242-5025, if you have
any questions.
Sincerely
Dan' T.
