' • EXPSBIT D (Cont'd)
' higher quality than the water in the river. Downstream fisheries
will not be adversely affected because of dewatering. The
current NPDES permit expires on June 30, 1979, and will be
renewed as required.
Pit run material is extracted with a front-end loader and
' loaded out to the off-site gravel plant. Various methods of
mining and moving the material will be used during the life
of the operation. Equipment used in mining and moving may
' include, but is not limited to, front-end loaders, dump trucks,
graders, dozers, grizzly, water trucks, water pump, drag line
' and a conveyor system. Sand and gravel varies radically in
thickness from one area to the next. The southern section of

1

Area 1 has 30 to 40 feet of material. The northeastern part
of that area has only about 15 feet of mineable material. In
Area 2 the thickness varies from 35 feet on the north side to
as little as 10 feet on the southwest side. Deposit thickness.
in Area 3 is fairly uniform, varying from 45 to 50 feet. In
Area 4 the sand varies from 21 to 55 feet across the property.
The sand and gravel deposit in this river bottom is under-
lain by a relatively impermeable gray shale. It is this shale
that will be the bottom of each excavation and will provide a
reasonably regular bed for the lakes to be created.
Large numbers of cottonwood, willow, Russian olive and
tamarisk trees have been or will be removed in Areas 1 and 9
prior to moving the overburden. These trees will be cut for fire-
wood for use by local residents. The residue will be hauled away
9
