• w

Pure live seed (PLS) is the best measure of seed quality. Trash and
seed that will not germinate are of no value in obtaining a stand. To
determine the pure live seed in a lot of seed, use the following formulas:
Y. Pure Live Seed = % Germination* x % Pur
100
When computing, change the percent figure to decimal fraction, i.e.,
87.6X = .876
The value of different seed lots can be compared by the following
formula:
Price per pound =Actual cost per 16. of PLS
PLS (decimal)
Number of lbs. to _ seedlings desired per sq. ft. x 43,560
plant per acre PLS x expected field x No. seeds/16.
**
emergence
EXAMPLE: Russian wildryegrass (175,000 seeds/lb.); 95Y. purity; 87.6%
germination; desire 10 seedlings/square foot; priced at $0.55
per pound.
1. PLS: .95 x .876 = .832 or 83.2%
2. Actual cost per lb. of PLS: .55 = $0.66
.832
3. Number of lbs. to _ 10 x 43,560
plant per acre .832 x .52 x 175,000 = 5.75 lbs./A
*For legumes, use germination plus hard seed
**Expected field emergence for small seeded legumes and grasses:
52X (.52), if laboratory germination is more than 80Y.;
33X (.33), if laboratory germination is 60 to 80%.
P.S. 3
