West Elk Mine <br />• Literature Search <br />The historic Buildings and Sites file of the Colorado Historical Society and the Archaeological <br />Survey file of the Office of the State Archaeologist were examined for previously recorded sites <br />afrer the completion of the field surveys. No evidence was found indicating the existence of known <br />sites in the vicinity of the survey. Therefore, there are no sites on the National Register of Historic <br />Places located in the project azea. <br />Additional literature searches were conducted by Western Cultural Resource Management in <br />September 1993, and April 1994. The searches identified 15 cultural resource reports including the <br />ones previously mentioned. Those reports are listed in Exhibit 10A. <br />A literature seazch was also conducted by Westem Cultural Resource Management in September <br />1996, prior to the field work for the Sylvester Gulch facilities azea. <br />Archaeological Clearance <br />West Elk Mine azchaeological surveys have been forwarded to the State Archaeologist and State <br />Historical Society for their review and ceaance. To date, no preservation or mitigation efforts <br />have been determined to be warranted for any identified sites at the West Elk Mine (see Exhibit <br />11). <br />• If the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation determines that preservation or <br />mitigation efforts are required at any identified site, Mountain Coal Company will comply with <br />OAHP requirements. <br />• <br />2.04-g ReviredJun. 1995 PR06; Rn~iredNav. 1996 PR07; RevitedJan. 1997TR79 <br />
