Summary of Lumsden Canyon Water Sample Statioh 2-28-01
In 1996, Iim Scheidt and Bruce Fowler constructed a water sample station in Lumsden Canyon.
The sample station was located about 1 1/2 miles above its mouth where the canyon forms. The
purpose was to collect water samples during stormwater dischazge in order to compare against
the drinking water standards, particulazly for radiological parameters. The sampler setup
consisted of a sampler and crest gauge. The sampler setup was designed to allow stotmwater
discharge to siphon thru upper and/or lower intakes into sample jugs buried in the streambed.
The sample station was inspected twice in 1996 and 3 times in 1997 (see inspection reports). In
1996, the sampler was partially functional and stormwater discharge was collected in the jugs.
However, in 1997, the sampler didn't collect enough water for analysis, so grab samples of
intermittent discharge were collected. Finally, on the last inspection, the station was found to be
washed out and was not repaired. The radiological data is summarized as follows:
Date Radium (pCi/11 Aloha ~nCi/Il Beta ~nCi/11 Uranium (me/11
Drinking (5.0) (15) (200) (No official limit)
Limit
7-1-96 2 13 13 ----
9-12-96 2 9.5 13 0.025
6
4
97 6
-
- ---- --- 0.296
7-23-97 5.3 113 '~ 61 0.448
10-30-97 5.2 180 37 0.185
The 1996 water samples represent stormwater discharge (better water quality), with the sample
discharge estimated to be about 5 cfs. The 1997 samples were taken during internttent flow
(<lgpm) a~td represent low flow, worst case water quality. The 1996 samples meet the drinking
water limits for radiological, but the 1997 samples are somewhat elevated, particulazly for alpha.
Driven the presence of uranium mines and radioactive mine waste in the LLUnsden drainage
upstream from the sample site, the elevated concentrations are to be expected.
Drinking water list parameters -The 7-1-96 sample had insufficient water to run the drinking
water list. The 9-12-96 sample was elevated in turbidity, iron, and manganese. In addition to
being elevated for radiological parameters, the 1997 samples exceeded the drinking limits as
follows:
6-4-97 sample -elevated for sodium, sulphate, TDS, hazdness, turbidity, and manganese.
7-23-97 sample -elevated for sodium, sulphate, TDS, hazdness, and turbidity.
10-30-97 sample - elevated for sodium, TDS, and bazdness.
