ea-03-1996 1a~00 303 aa7 2999 P.Oa <br />Observations <br />• After typically very windy and often snow-free winter <br />conditions, the heaviest April/May rainfall ~ on record (over 14 <br />inches) occurred, causing small areas of mass slippage in the <br />topsoil layer, followed by some rilling on the steep slopes <br />(Figure 4a). <br />• Germination and establishment of the primaril~~~ cool <br />season grass mix was very successful, .with seedlings occupying <br />the areas In which the mulch had ultimately given way ~iS well as <br />the broad intervening areas of intact mulch (Figure 4b). By <br />September, 1995 (Figure 4c), grass cover of primarily western <br />wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii) and thickspike whe~dgrass <br />(~lytri9ia dasystach~) had developed to an extent beyond that <br />typically found in first year stands. <br />•Vegetation establishment in these areas was very good, <br />though qualitatively not as much cover resulted as on the <br />buttress slope. Effects from the Soil Guard mulch and the steep <br />north-facing conditions may have contributed to enhanced <br />vegetation development on the buttress slope. <br />
