ea-03-1996 1a~00 303 aa7 2999 P.Oa
Observations
• After typically very windy and often snow-free winter
conditions, the heaviest April/May rainfall ~ on record (over 14
inches) occurred, causing small areas of mass slippage in the
topsoil layer, followed by some rilling on the steep slopes
(Figure 4a).
• Germination and establishment of the primaril~~~ cool
season grass mix was very successful, .with seedlings occupying
the areas In which the mulch had ultimately given way ~iS well as
the broad intervening areas of intact mulch (Figure 4b). By
September, 1995 (Figure 4c), grass cover of primarily western
wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii) and thickspike whe~dgrass
(~lytri9ia dasystach~) had developed to an extent beyond that
typically found in first year stands.
•Vegetation establishment in these areas was very good,
though qualitatively not as much cover resulted as on the
buttress slope. Effects from the Soil Guard mulch and the steep
north-facing conditions may have contributed to enhanced
vegetation development on the buttress slope.
