~.
• Abstract
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. conducted Class III intensive cultural resource
inventory for four proposed seismic lines, three proposed core holes and two proposed air shafts
with associated access roads. These are part of Twentymile Coal Company's 2004 exploration
program for the Foidel Creek Mine, Routt County, Colorado. This inventory resulted in the
discovery of four prehistoric isolated finds. In addition one previously recorded prehistoric site
lies within the project's area of potential effect (APE).
The four prehistoric isolated finds are not eligible for the National Register. Previously
recorded SRT157 was recently re-evaluated by MAC during the alluvial valley fill project for
Twentymile Coal Company (McKibbin 2003). It was recommended that the site be tested for
buried cultwal material prior to any surface disturbing impacts to the site. Several shovel probes
and badger back dirt piles were screened in a small pocket of deposition found within the APE
for the bleeder shaft. No cultural material was recovered from these areas. Based on these
results.it is recommended that SRTl57 is not eligible for the National Register.
MAC recommends cultural resource clearance for Twentymile Coa] Company's proposed
2004 Exploration program as depicted in Figures 1, 2 & 3.
•
• =ii-
