When a group of neighbors first met with United"s representatives (Mr.
_ Mayger and Mr. McGehee) they were asked what hours the pit would be in
operation and Mr. McGehee answered, "From 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM." Not so! There
have been very few days since they started that they have adhered to this
schedule. Most of the time it is from 6:30 AM to after 7:00 PM. On Tuesday,
May 24th the equipment was started about 5:40 AM and worked up until 7:10 PM
and only stopped at that time because something broke down in the equipment.
We could see a man welding something until after 8:00 PM. The whole time he
was doing that, another man was moving piles of gravel with a front-end
loader. On Wednesday, May 25th, the equipment started up at 5:30 AM and
stopped at 7:34 PM. After receiving complaints from several neighbors, Mr.
Mayger told my husband Henry that they would not start the generators until
6;30 AM and the crusher at 7:00 AM. They are keeping pretty much to that
schedule but are still working late in the evening, stopping at 8:00 PM on
Thursday and 6:56 PM on Friday. They are also working today - Saturday.
2. At the public meeting which you attended at Friendship Hall, I myself asked
You, Mr. Dillie, how far away this operation had to be and you said 200 feet.
My daughter then asked you if this also meant their road and you answered Yes.
Well, my husband measured and. from our lot line to the edge of the berms is
only 31 feet. The road is being built right on the other side of the berms
and the crusher is positioned in such a way that it ie directly across from
our house and the noise is making our house one big sounding board. The berme
do not help at all because the conveyor sits far above them. It is getting to
be a little too much listening to this racket for up to 14 hours a day, six,
or will it be seven, days a week, holidays included?
3. From the beginning of the operation we were bombarded with gale force winds
the whole time. United's men were moving dirt around with their bulldozers,
and of course, we got all of the grit over here. The little bit of eater they
put on the ground did not really help at all and of course the berms are bare
and that dirt was also blowing. Our house sits back about two-tenths of a
mile from the highway and we even got the dust from the shoulder work they
were doing.
4. They widened the shoulder on the far aide of the highway and moved our
paper and boxes (for six families) back about fifteen feet but put them back
in the ground much higher that the postal regulations require. (Several years
ago we had to lower the boxes to accommodate the mail carrier.) This was done
without the Postmaster"e knowledge or consent.
5. On May 16th they had the water users (our access) lane blocked for over an
