2.04.4
L
S~
c
l of ~J
n
lJ
.~-
~ .~
S'"
•
Cultural Resources
Cultural and Historic Resource Information
There are no cultural and historic resources listed on the National Register of
Historic Places within areas likely to be affected by surface activities. A class
III inventory was conducted on approximately 350 acres within the permit area
in 1977. The entire study area was devoid of archaeological and historical
remains. (Conner, 1977) No evidence of historic occupation was uncovered in
the survey. The inventory report is contained in Appendices 5-1 and 5-2.
The complete unedited Wignall report, including copies of all plates and a copy
of the map of the study area, is included in Appendix 5-1. The date of the
report is located on page 1 and the date the inventory was conducted is located
under "Project Description". According to the final West-Central Colorado Coal
Environment Statement, U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land
Management, Volume 2, the study was a Class III inventory. A check of the
National Register for Cultural and historic sites within the permit area and
adjacent area is contained in Appendix 5-3. The check was performed by the
Colorado Historical Society.
The old mine workings on both sides of the Colorado River in the permit area,
although dating back to the early 1900's, are not considered to be of historical
value due to the fact that the workings have been permanently sealed and
evidence of the workings is not visible from the surface. All information
available to the applicant regarding cultural and historic resources has been
provided in this section and Appendix 5-1.
of subsidence on potential undiscovered archaeological sites will be negligible
The question of potential subsidence is covered in Tab Section 20. The effect
based on the information currently available.
5-1 (New 3/1/96)
