Based on visual observations of the site, the
mining activities appear to date back several decades, prior to the
enactment of reclamation laws which now require that all mined
lands be reclaimed to a beneficial use. The old mining operations
were fairly random in nature and have left a large disturbed area
consisting of steep highwalls, pits, and piles of overburden
material scattered over the site. Noland, Inc. has proposed in
their permit application.to reclaim these old disturbances during
the course of mining operations and to return the surface to a
pastureland postmining land use. The Division feels that this
commitment by Noland, Inc. will result in a significant improvement
in the condition of the land once mining and reclamation activities
have been completed.
Please contact me at the Durango Field Office, 1474 Main Ave., Room
223, Durango, Colorado 81301, telephone no. (303) 247-5062 if you
have any questions.
Sincerely,
~-
Tom Gillis
Environmental Protection Specialist
/tdg
cc: Frank Noland
