This is an on-going question, which they have been addressing for yeazs. They aze
preparing a letter for you, outlining the general situation of reuse, from the public health
perspective.
Additionally, we have contacted the chemists of Western Sugar Company. They inform us that
when the material left the plant, it normally would have contained calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
with a trace of magnesium carbonate and about 12 to 15% beet "impurities", which include
sodium and potassium sale, fiber, dirt and some amino acids. They feel that the beet impurities
would have long ago degraded and/or leached out of the dikes, and the remainder would be
simply a very stable calcium carbonate. Since the beet impurities were in essence from the
ground when the beets were grown, they see no way the material can be regarded as a health
concern.
Some studies have been done by the sugaz company evaluating the material for alternative uses.
Mr. Maggi of their Denver office has supplied us with the attached analysis of the material as
it is when it leaves the plant The figures shown are from the Fc Morgan plant, but he indicated
they aze quite representative of all the plants in their system.
