• Section 2.04.7 Hydrology Description.
(1) Ground Water Information.
General. The continental and marine shales and sandstone
underlying the coal bearing zone have a potential recoverable
groundwater supply of up to 600 acre-feet of water per square
mile, depending on strata thickness. In Gunnison and Delta
Counties, little information exists about actual depth of
groundwater except along perennial streams (Price and Arrow,
1974). Similarly, flow rates from non-streambed aquifer wells
are also unknown. Shales, especially the t4ancos Shale, have
shown high dissolved solids concentrations (1,000 to 3,000
milligrams/liter) in wells tapping that aquifer between Paonia
and Hotchkiss.
• (a)(i) and (ii). Depth and extent of water table and aquifers.
The elevation of the water table across the lease is variable
and unpredictable. From observation wells drilled by ARCO,
it has been impossible to establish a trend to estimate the
water table elevation. It varies by structure, topography,
and location. For the same reasons the potentiometric surface
is at present indeterminable.
Drawing 2.04.7(1)(a)(i)-1 shows the location of eleven wells
drilled to determine water Level and water quality in the area
of the mine. These wells were drilled by ARCO as part of their
investigation for the Mount Gunnison Mine No. 1. Information
presented herein has been derived from data gathered for the
Mount Gunnison Mine No. 1, and presented in the ARCO Application
for Permit on file with the MLR and CSD".

5-7
