1

' Potts-Ildefoneo Complex
25 to 65 percent elopes (X10F) ~ These loamy and atox~y loam soils are
an mesa aide-slopes and eloping mesas
t Capability IInit: YIIe ! at elevations of 5000 to 7000 feet.
Range Site: Brushy loam - PJ Yoodland The average annual precipitation is
about 12 inches, the mean annual air
temperature is about 46 F., and the
' frost-free period is about 120 days. The Potts loam soil occupies the deeper
and less eroded parts oi' the landscape. The Idlefonso story loam soil occu~ies
the more shallox and breaking positions. It makes up about 35 percent of the
' association as the Potts• makes up about 60 percent. About 5 percent of the unit
is a few small areas of Clapper eton,+/ loam soils. The Idlefonso loam soil is
deep to moderately deep and xell drained. It formed in basaltic alluvium.
Typically the eurface layer is a broxnish loam about 5 inches thick. The subsoil
is a brown clay loam about 20 isiches thick. The substratum below 25 inches ie a
pinkish xhite to white calcareous loam with 10 to 40 percent basaltic cobble.
Permeability is moderate. Effective rooting depth is 60 plus inches and the a..
' vailable water capacity is high. Surface runoff is moderate and the erosionr.
hazard is slight. The Idlefonso atoay loam ie a shallow to moderately deep and
well drained. It formed in basaltic elope wash. Typically the surface layer..
is a brown stony loam about 5 inches thick. The subsoil ie a Drown stony loam
about 6 inches thick. The underlying autstratum belox 11 inches is a white cal-.
cazeous stony.loa9. This unit has an increasing amount of cobble with increasing
' iiepth. Permeability is rapid. Effective rooting depth is about 20 inches and
the available water capac;ity is low. Surface runoff is moderate and the erosion
hazard is moderate. This association has a potential habitat for mule deer, tur-
key, chukar, grey aquirre~l, cottontail rabbit and some coyotes. A:ost of the food
' and shelter is obtained i'rom the vegetation in this unit and surrounding areas.
The vegetation consists of 'piryyon pine and juniper, Indian ricegrass, some sage
and other grasses. IIse of this unit is mainly native range. Development of this
area xould be limited to its scope due to slope and the cobble that is present
in the profile. Slope is steep making construction united.
1
J
1

1 1~]
