• q 127 Wetmore - Rock Outcroe complex. This soil unit, found on very
steep mountainsides and canyon sides, is composed of about 50 percent
Wetmore soil and 35 percent Rock outcrop, along with 10 percent Lakehelen
very stony fine sandy loam and 5 percent Tecolote very gravelly sandy
loam. The Wetmore soil is a shallow, well drained soil formed in residuum
derived mainly from gneiss and granite. Slope is 40 to 70 percent.
Typically, the subsurface layer is very pale brown, very gravelly sandy
loam about 3 inches thick. The subsoil is very gravelly sandy loam about
7 inches thick. Hard, fractured gneiss is at a depth of 10 inches. The
soil is slightly acid. The rock outcrops consist of gneiss or
granodiorite, forming short cliffs and crags about 10 to 75 feet high.
Slope is 50 to 80 percent. Permeability is rapid, available water
capacity is very low, runoff is rapid to very rapid and erosion hazard is
very high. The major plant community is ponderosa pine with an understory
of shrubs and grasses. The unit is used for wildlife habitat, watershed,
and recreation.
Soil Physical and Chemical Characteristics
Ten soil pits and an access road cut were excavated within the area to be
disturbed by surface activities at the Southfield Mine. Resulting samples
were analyzed for the specific parameters identified by Table 23, Soil
Analysis Parameters. Analytical data collected by Dorchester was
evaluated by soil horizon to determine potential suitability of each soil
horizon as a plant growth medium. Analysis results for the mine area are
summarized in Table 24, Mine Area - Sail Chemical and Physical Lab
Analyses.
Because existing disturbance occurred prior to promulgation of regulatory
requirements for soil sampling and analysis, Dorchester sampled stockpiled
topsoil from existing disturbance areas. Analyses results for these
samples are presented in Table 25, Stockpiled Topsoil - Soil Chemical and
Physical Lab Analyses. In addition to this documentation of material
• suitability characteristics, reclamation efforts in the Southfield mine
area document the feasibility of using these soil materials for
reclamation.
2.94.9-15
