. Snowber.ry is the dominant shrub associated with the Douglas-fir.
Utah S~rviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis) and Gambel's Oak
(Quercus gambelii) are present as subdominant shrubs. A sparse
!.. ~...
herbaceous layer is dominated by Elk Sedge and Northern Bedstraw.
Twelve other herbaceous species were observed in the understory.
Percent frequency, percent cover, density and height are listed
in Table J3 for species observed in the Douglas-fir forest samples.
Douglas fit stem size categories are shown in Table J4.
Douglas-fir provides a minimum of food for domestic and wild
species but receives intensive use as cover. Numerous trees
with fire sears were found, but in all cases the trees were at
the edg@ of the stand.
• JUNIPER WOODLAND
Juniper Woodland is dominated by Utah Juniper (Juniperus osteo-
s erma). Pinyon Pine (Pinus edulis) is present very infrequently.
Quantitative data from the tree overstory of a sample stand in
the vicinity are presented in Table J5. These trees are rela-
tively short, averaging about :5 to 7 m (15 to 20 feet) ip height
with some as tall as 8 to 9 m (25 to 30 feet).
The shrub ],,aver of the Juniper Woodlands (Table J6) .is composed
primarily o.f Big Sagebrush which occurs at a density of 1330
individuals per acre, covers :about 5 percent of the understory,
and averages about 70 cm in height. Utah Juniper saplings com-
prise the remainder of the shrub layer. The soil is rocky and
.the ground cover under the junipers is sparse (48 cover by her-
baceous species). Tansy Mustard (Descurainia pinnata), Cheat
Grass (Bromus tectorum), and Phlox (Phlox longifolia) were the
most commonly encountered herbaceous species. Three species
of .cactus occur in the understory: Prickly Pear (Opuntia erinacea),
J-4
