DANIELSON, DEPUTY STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: LAKEWOOD BRICK & TILE -CHURCH PIT, JEFFERSON COUNTY,
APPLICATION FOR MINING AND RECLAMATION PERMIT
As requested by your office, we have reviewed the application for a clay pit
on Rocky Flats. This pit does not appear to have a significanteffect on water
resources. We do, however, question the statement on page 14 of Exhibit E
that "then? is no water except that from snow or rain that has fallen directly
into the pit" . There are two irrigation ditches located within 100 feet of the
edge of the north pit. These ditches have been constructed in the Rocky Flats
Alluvium, a permeable sandy gravel. The applicant has failed to consider
either the effects of the pit on the ditches through increased seepage losses
or the effects of the ditches on the pit through the contribution of seepage to
increased pit water. The applicant should evaluate these effects prior to
Board approval of the permit.
Hal D. Simpson
HDS:SSH:mvf
cc: Jim Clark, Div. Eng.
