P
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
• Marvel Pit
Reclamation Potential
' The Marvel Pit area, located 2~ miles south of Marvels Coloredo~~ is
dominated by a pinyon-Suniper woodland. Shrubs and grassgs dominate the
understory population with occasional Sorbs present. The disturbed ~irea
is supporting a stand of annual weedy Sorbs that must be controlled I~rior
to seeding. A list of the current vegetation is attached.
During the operation of the gravel pity attSmpts must be made to
stockpile the soil material that could be used as topsoil. Also, the
' gravel operation should .work the slopes to a 3:1 maximum and should pre-
vent excess water from flowing onto the site off of adjacent areas.
After the area is sloped to 3:1 or less, the topsoil must be applied
from 3 inches to 12 inches deep over the entire disturbed site. A mulch
can then he applied and worked into the soil material; approximately 2000
pounds of clean straw or hay per acre is necessazy. .
The seeding operation should follow immediately after the mulching
operation.- The attached guide sheet 1'_sts potential species of pras:;es
and s`~ru'~s. Additional information as to seeding rates, seeding ~eni;hs
and ser;~^c da+.es are also included on t::e ride sheet. If t.h? seea is
to be br:>dcast seeded, the seeding rates -nst be doubled •:.1d Yee s'_':e
raked by bend to cover the seed.
r~
L

o
