P <br />UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE <br />SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE <br />• Marvel Pit <br />Reclamation Potential <br />' The Marvel Pit area, located 2~ miles south of Marvels Coloredo~~ is <br />dominated by a pinyon-Suniper woodland. Shrubs and grassgs dominate the <br />understory population with occasional Sorbs present. The disturbed ~irea <br />is supporting a stand of annual weedy Sorbs that must be controlled I~rior <br />to seeding. A list of the current vegetation is attached. <br />During the operation of the gravel pity attSmpts must be made to <br />stockpile the soil material that could be used as topsoil. Also, the <br />' gravel operation should .work the slopes to a 3:1 maximum and should pre- <br />vent excess water from flowing onto the site off of adjacent areas. <br />After the area is sloped to 3:1 or less, the topsoil must be applied <br />from 3 inches to 12 inches deep over the entire disturbed site. A mulch <br />can then he applied and worked into the soil material; approximately 2000 <br />pounds of clean straw or hay per acre is necessazy. . <br />The seeding operation should follow immediately after the mulching <br />operation.- The attached guide sheet 1'_sts potential species of pras:;es <br />and s`~ru'~s.
