Tl,e subsoil material stored in stockpiles shall be used to cover tl~e spoil
material and to esteblisli a final grade prior to applying the topsoil material.
Once the grade is established, the entire site .to be reclaimed shall be ripped or
subsoiled to a depth adequate to break the compaction in the spoil material and the
subsoil. A minimum ripping depth of 24 inches should be adequate. Tlie ripper or
subsoiler sliould.be spaced 'at a maximum width of three feet.
The topsoil material must 6e applied uniformly over the area at depths of at
least twelve inches. The Derrick soil and the Space City soil may be mixed during
this step to create a homogeneous soil material. Qr the separation can be maintained
to result in a neat natural state on the reclaimed site. There are benefits to
either option.~•'~' ~ +~~'~'
While spreading the topsoil, surface irregularities such ee water courses,
depressions, furrows, and other features [hat will limit water erosion must be
ine[alled.~ If these features ere not carefully planned and installed, the results
of runoff may destroy the [eclamation effort. Toole such ae basin blades and contour
furrowera can be very useful in the installation of an irregular surface,
SEEDBED PREPARATION
After tl~e topsoil is evenly spread, conventional farming equipment can 6e used
to prepare tl~e desire seedbed. The site is removed from the principle farming areas,
but I~erliaps the seedbed preparation can still be contracted with a farmer using leis
own equipment.
All operations will be'conducted following the contour of the land. 7lie following;
is a listing of the minimal preparations needed;
1) Removal of all large stones and rocks that will damage equipment.
Nand labor will generally be required.
2) Subsoiling to mix subsoil and topsoil layers and to fracture any compaction
from spreading the topsoil, .
3) Primary tillage will offset disk, rotary tiller, or chf.s.el plow to loosen
soil and destroy weed growth,
4) Packing the soil surface to break clods, bury rocks, and firm tl~e seedbed.
S) Mulching the soil surface to retain moiiture. Use a good quality flay or
straw mulch free or noxious weeds for this operat)on, Tlie mulch material
should be evenly spread at a rate of 150.0 to 2000 pounds per acre. 'C lie
mulch must be anchored with a studded roller or straw crimper.
Y
The tillage operations will release soil moisture (approximately 2 inches of
evaporation loss per operation) if the soil material is moist. These operations
should be completed in early June or in early October immediately ahead of planting.
All operations must be completed timely to not delay planting.
Optional operations may include:
1) Pitting or land. imprinting to create an irregular surface.
~ 2) Fertilizing with 20 to 40 units of nitrogen per acre. base all fertilizer
appllcationa on current soil tests at time of reclamation.
3) Planting a cover crop to create a standing mulch.
