Ste- 2.04.9
4-6.3' Subsoil
• West Bench (D-D~ 0-3.5' Subsoil
1990-1991 Sanborn Creek Mute Soil Survey - A soil survey was completed for the areas to be
disturbed by the Sanborn Creek Mine during the period November 2, 1990 through February 23,
1991. The area was segregated into six different mapping areas. Soil depths were determined in all
areas except area E by use of a soil probe. In area E, sample pits were excavated by a backhce. Based
on USDS-SCS soil survey information, the steep slopes above the areas to be disturbed by the
Sanborn Creek Mme are predominantly mapping unit 75 (Tomorthents-Rock outcrop, sandstone,
complex, while mine disturbance areas all fall within the boundaries for the Totriorthenu-Haplargids
cornplex, very stony mapping unit and include some previously disturbed areas.
Map Area A is the Sanborn Creek portal disturbance area. In the mid-1970's this area was excavated
in order to locate the GSeam The area includes a nearly vertical rock face made up of shales and
sandstone and a small flat area just to the north of the railroad tracks. A sandy loam material has been
deposited in the Elat portions of chic area by run-off from the steep slopes above. The underlying
material in the portal area is coal The underlying material in the area to the east of the portal area is
gravel.
Map Area B is the area south of the railroad tracks and north of the old state highway This area is
the south fill slope of the railroad roadbed. The fill for the railroad tracks was constructed in the early
1900's. It was probably constructed ruing a balanced cut and fill technique where material was
borrowed from the hillside above. Topsoil is available from Map Area B with relocation of the
railroad tracks adjacent to the Sanborn Creek Mtne disturbed area. Topsoil salvage from the fill slope
is limited by the extent salvage operations could be condutted without causing instability in the
railroad fill.
• Map Area C is the comdor which contains the railroad tracks and ballast, the old access road to the
east yard, and foundations for several old houses. No undisturbed soils remain in this area.
Map Area D is an undisturbed area just to the east of Sanborn Creek This small alluvial fan occurs at
the outlet of Sanborn Creek This unit contains silt looms and silt clay looms that currently support a
dense stand of oak brush. The underlying material is very stony with large rocks and boulders which
would effectively limit topsoil salvage. The soil type in this area is the same as adjacent Map Area E
Map Area E is a small alluvial fan formed at the base of the cliffs which rim the area. This unit
contains silt looms and silt clayloamc. The underlying material is small rocks and sand. This area was
previously occupied by several houses. At the tune of the survey, domestic refuse, junk cars, and the
remnants of a razed house covered the area.
1991 East Yana and Coal Stockpile Area Soil Survey- A soil survey of the area to be disturbed in the
East Yana and Ells Creek Coal Stockpile areas was completed on September 17, 1991. This area falls
within the boundaries of the Torriorthents-Haplargids complex, very stony mapping unit. The mine
disturbance areas surveyfd were broken into five separate sub-areas. Much of the surveyfd areas had
been previously disturbed, however, some soil remained which was available for salvage. All of the
soils present in areas 1, 2, 3, and 4 were identified as being of sufficient thickness and were sufficiently
free of contamination to warrant soil recovery efforts. Area 5 had been sufficientlyduttttfied that no
topsoil was available for salvage.
1994 Substation No. 3 Soil Survey - A soil survey was completed for the area to be disturbed by the
Substation No. 3. This area falls within the boundaries of the Tomorthenu-Haplatgids complex, very
stony mapping unit. Three soil test pits were excavated. The A, B, and C horizons were identified.
• The soil depths in this area ranged from 7 to 8.5 feet. The soil in this area could be characterized as
silt looms and silt clay looms
PR04 2.04-86 Revised August 2000
