The closest meteorological station where wind direction and speed data have been recorded is
Mountain Coal Compan}~s West Elk Mine, located approaamately 1.5 miles south of the mine permit
area. Wind records for the period from March through August 1987 indicate that prevailing surface
winds roughly follow the aligrunent of the North Fork Valley, with winds from the southeast (down-
valle}~ dominating, calm wind conditions (Q.5 m/s) occurring only 0.5 percent of the time, and mean
wind speeds in the 2 to 4 tnls (5 to10 tlip6) range. The average recorded wind speed u 3.6 mis (8A
