Box 309
J~ Agriculture Carbondale, CO 81623
File Code: 5400
Date: April 14, 1998
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Sirs:
This is in response to a Public Notice concerning application for harvesting of rock on land
owned by the Gallegos Corporation near the Town of Mazble.
Since the property is adjacent to National Forest land, I have several concerns with this proposal:
1) Assurance must be provided that harvesting of talus rock on the private property will no[ de-
stabilize the slope on the Forest, which is above the harvesting area.
2) The rock harvesting must include safeguards to prevent rolling rock from falling onto County
Road 3 and endangering the traveling public.
3) The workers engaged in the harvesting operation must be informed that camping on the Na-
tional Forest (i.e. Bogan Flats campground) is not permitted. Camping on the Forest is only al-
lowed for recreational users only, not for employee housing.
4) It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that they are operating on private property and
not encroaching onto the National Forest. They should contact Wyman Bontrager at (970) 945-
3289 regarding the status of land survey at this location.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Please contact Assistant District Ranger Tom
Kuekes with any questions, at (970) 963-2266.
Sincerely,
KEVIN T.
