Selenium ig the toxic principle. Not a common problem since plant is highly
unpalatable. Good indicator of eeleniferous soils. Plants that grow on
Cretaceous or Eocene shale soils bearing selenium may affect animals. When
plants ate crushed in the hand, a sulfurous odor is given off. Poisoning is
c~rmulative. Poisoning can cause alkali disease (the chronic disease) which
dcvelopa from eacin~ sma'I1 amounts of saleni.m-hearing vegetation over an
extensive period of time or poisoning can cause blind staggers (the acute
disease) which casults from fending on relatively large amounts of selenium
in a short time. In acute cases of selenium poisoning, enis+ale walk
aimlessly into ob;ccts. "Blind staggers" or alkali d:.sease are names given
for the disease. ?loofs grow abnormally with the '_ormation of deep rings.
The hair falls out--especially the mane and tell of horses. Recovery of
animals affected may take several months ox years, eves after being placed
on good forage.

Effect and aymptame
Poisoning ie caused by selenium. .Signs of chronic poisocing are cough coat,
dullness, emaciation, lameness, hoof deformities may occur and the mane and
tail may fall out. Acute poisoning symtome are loss of appetite, depression,
polyuria, dyspnea, coma and 3eath. This plant is a good indicator of
selenium bearing sc`_ls.
