Not a common problem since plant is highly <br />unpalatable. Good indicator of eeleniferous soils. Plants that grow on <br />Cretaceous or Eocene shale soils bearing selenium may affect animals. When <br />plants ate crushed in the hand, a sulfurous odor is given off. Poisoning is <br />c~rmulative. Poisoning can cause alkali disease (the chronic disease) which <br />dcvelopa from eacin~ sma'I1 amounts of saleni.m-hearing vegetation over an <br />extensive period of time or poisoning can cause blind staggers (the acute <br />disease) which casults from fending on relatively large amounts of selenium <br />in a short time. In acute cases of selenium poisoning, enis+ale walk <br />aimlessly into ob;ccts. "Blind staggers" or alkali d:.sease are names given <br />for the disease. ?loofs grow abnormally with the '_ormation of deep rings. <br />The hair falls out--especially the mane and tell of horses.
