October 20, 2003.
Recommended Placement of Groundwater Observation Wells
Haldorson Gravel Mine
Don R. May, PE, PhD
Phase 1
groundwater
flow
1
Schematic -not in schale
Observation Wells
• Existing
® Phase 1
O Future phases (tentative)
Explanation
All indications are that the flow of groundwater is this area is from SW to NE. Observation wells
should be placed so that there is the greatest likelihood that they will be along flow lines. I would
recommend the pattern of six wells as shown around phase 1 to achieve this objective.
The remaining observation wells should provide more than adequate coverage to understand the
effect of the pit on regional groundwater flow. As the excavation moves south and a greater
understanding of the groundwater condition is gained, through the monitoring program, there is less
and less need for the south monitoring well located on the interior of the site.
Placement of wells surrounding future phases could be constructed now, however I think it would be
prudent to wait until data has been collected on phase 1. This data may suggest a different
configuration and/or a different number of wells.
