Property taxes paid to Gunnison County for the calendar year 1980
amounted to approximately $50,000, much of which is designated for the
School District. For the same year, production of coal from Federal
Coal Lease No. D-044569 resulted in royalty payments of about $36,000 to
the Federal Government. The State of Colorado received over $75,000
from the Bear Coal Company for the calendar year 1980 in the form of
severance taxes. In 1980, the Bear Coal Company also paid over $35,000
to the Abandoned Mine Fund Tax and; $413,000 to the UMWA Welfare Fund;
$115,000 for medical insurance and other medical benefits; and, $60,000
as Black Lung Tax.
The Bear Coal Company has a complete program devoted to pre-employment
training. Currently all new production and maintenance employees
receive 40 hours of pre-employment courses on first aid and accident
prevention. The Bear Coal Company also exceed applicable standards for
• annual re-training and refresher courses.
Size and Confiourations of Operations
The Bear Coal Company currently produces coal from Federal Coal Lease
No. D-044569. The coal mined by the Bear Coal Company is transported
from the underground workings through either the Bear No. 1 Portals or
the Bear No. 2 Portals. As the operation moves into the adjacent
Federal Coal Lease No. D-052501, coal will be removed from surface
entries known as the Bear No. 3 Portals.
The Bear Coal Company plans to produce approximately 250,000 to 300,000
tons of coal per year from a room and pillar method of underground
mining. The surface area necessary to facilitate underground mining
will be only approximately 10 acres. The extent of underground workings
will be on the order of about 20 acres per year.
