WestWater Associates, Inc,
Mrs. Kay Wiesner
61820 b4etimac Lane
Montrose, CO 81401
TAM l_ DECKER, G.P.G.
62331 VERDE DR.
MONTAOSE, CO 87401
(979) 249-5683
FAX {970) 249-5683

lob #603-W
Wiesner
June 20, 2003
Re: Preliminary Opinion - Graundwater lntpacu of Haldorson Proposed Gravel Pit
Dear Mrs. Wiesner
Rs per our phone conversations and meetings earlier this week, WestWater Associates
has undertaken a preliminary hydrogeologic evaluation of the proposed t60.acre
Haldorsart Gravel Mine, on Spring Creek Iv4esa. You requested we review portions of
their application for permit to the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology, CMLRB,
and Montrose County. You directed us to conduct field inspections, water tight and
registered well location and adjudication, review and inspect the property to determine if
the proposed excavation would impact exis[ing water resources on the Mesa.
We have resided on Sprim~ Creek Mesa for 25 years and have investigated groundwater
conditions 'in numerous areas for subdivision applications, gravel pits, septic
contami+7ation and ditch artd canal losses. We have been, and are currently, retained by
gravel operators to advise them ss to.groundwater impacts and litigation, reclamation and
pit s[ability. In addition, we have assisted in water rights and evaluation of additional
water for Silver Springs Trout Farnt (located 1/3 mile east of the proposed pit),
supervised construction of alluvial wells along LaSalle Road, which supply a large
mobile home park, and observed tl,e irrigation dio•ersion and application of irrigation
water practices o7t the Mesa for many years.
The pit is proposed for location on the east half, east half, Section 24, T49N, R10W,
NMPM. 'it is bounded on the north by LaSalle Road, west by 6175 Road and south by
relatively new subdivision of larger than average homes. The pit would be bounded on
the east by the Bean Ranch on. the southern '/. of the pit, and the Nation's "Hillside
Horttes[ead", along the northern %. mile. The propert}• currently is imgated farm ground,
attd one of the {arger contiguous operational fauns left oa the mesa. The current owner is
the Gearge family. The grourtd surface slopes gently from southwest to north and
northeast, with irrigation warer being derived from the CI and C]N Laterals. Irrigation
water is spread via row crops and/or t7ood irrigation in a northerly and northeasterly
direction. The Bean Ranch to the east contains approximately 100 acres of irrigated farm
ground. The entire land parcel west of 6 f 75 Road is similaz in nature in that it is all
irrigated pasture and craplar7d. Again, the ground slopes gently from southwest to
northeast toward t17e pit.
