The proposed
action including subsequent reclamation should not have significant long-term impacts on wildlife
resources. It should be noted that our review is based on written documentation with no on-site
assessment.
Our office would be interested in reviewing any future applications which would expand the
current surface extraction to the north and/or northwest (closer to the Arkansas or Huerfano
Rivers). Maintaining appropriate buffers between extraction activities and dynamic river systems
is critical in avoiding future encroachment problems. Streambank hardening is often the selected
alternative for attempting to remedy these situations. Although the river is often viewed as the
source of these problems, improper planning is typically the root cause. We strive to identify
potential problems earlier in the process so that appropriate planning can be made.
The Division of Wildlife appreciates the opportunity to provide comments.
