4 <br />Nature of Proposed Development <br />• <br />The proposed development includes face-ups for the Wise Hill No. 6 <br />and Wise Hill Wo. 7 mines, construction of facilities for the mines, such <br />as bath houses, parking areas, and supply areas, and underground shafts. <br />The improvement of two short stretches of existing access road is also <br />planned. Surface disturbance will be limited primarily to the NE!sS4J'; and <br />W'gNW'-;SE`;, Sec. 6 with the exception of a small area immediately to the north, <br />which includes the access roads. <br />LITERATURE SEARCH <br />Despite the fact that there has been some archaeological reconnaissance <br />in the vicinity of our study area, very little is presently known about the <br />prehistoric inhabitants of the Craig area. This lack of knowledge is pri- <br />~• marily attributable to the paucity of diagnostic material recovered during <br />the surveys. We know that there was a substantial prehistoric occupation <br />in the area, but without further work, specifically in the form of archae- <br />ological excavation, we cannot interpret that occupation with any certainty <br />or clarity. <br />According to the records of the Office of the State Archaeologist and <br />LOPA, two archaeological projects have previously been carried out in the <br />immediate area of this survey, both in the summer of 1975. Dr. Joe Lischka <br />of the University of Colorado passed within one-half mile of our survey area <br />during his reconnaissance of a proposed railroad right-of-v+ay for lJ. R. Grace <br />and Company in connection with the Northwest Colorado Coal Environmental <br />Impact Statement (Bureau of Land Management 1976). The second survey was <br />• <br />
