• INTRODUCTION <br />Project Administration <br />In 1976 t1r. Al Barnes of Empire Energy Corporation, Craig, Colorado, <br />contacted the Laboratory of Public Archaeology (LOPA), Colorado State <br />University, fort Collins, requesting an archaeological reconnaissance of <br />the proposed site of two new coal mines. The 291.67 ac projeet~area is <br />located about .5 km east of the Williams Fork River and abet 8 mi south- <br />west of Craig, Moffat County, Colorado (Figs. 1, 2). <br />An attempt to carry out the reconnais ce was made in December, 1976, <br />~~ <br />but was unsuccessful due to inclement weather. LOPA was recontacted by <br />Mr. Barnes during the following summer, and the fieldwork was performed on <br />August 9, 10, and 11, 1977 by Gary P. Smith and Matthew S. Freedman, employ- <br />~;• ees of LOPA, under the direction of Dr. Calvin H. Jennings, Director. <br />The survey was conducted under the Department of the Interior Antiquities <br />Permit No. 77-CO-046, and is in compliance with FEO 11593 and the Historic <br />Preservation Act. It is our duty to recommend a course of action which will <br />protect the area's cultural resources from unlawful or inadvertent destruction. <br />The project tract is located entirely within Sec. 6, T5n, R91w and con- <br />sists of the NE'-ENE';, S!;NE';, EzSE;, NW!;SE!;, and the NE',SW!;. At the time of <br />the survey, about 41 ac were affected by housing built by Emprire Energy, <br />and approximately 91 ac were used for the cultivation of wheat, leaving <br />153.5 ac undeveloped. A small area had already been disturbed by earlier <br />mining or quarrying operations. <br /> <br />
