5
• archaeological reconna'ssance of the proposed coal lease tracts in
I
Moffat, Rio Blanco, and Routt Counties, Colorado (Arthur T977).
Large corner notched projectile points are characteristic of the
Middle Prehistoric period, and there has been occupation of the Yampa
Basin and !!illiams Fork Mountains fror.~ at least this time (Arthur 1977).
Arthur reports six sites from this period, the inhabitants of which
~~ere generalized hunter-gatherers, using a variety of hunting techniques,
including mass hunting of large animals such as bison and pronghorn. To
date, no large kill sites have been located in this area.
The Late Prehistoric period is characterized by small side notched
points with basal notches (Muiioy 1953:151). These sites are better
represented 9n the study area than the earlier ones. The Historic period
is a continuation of the Late Prehistoric period. However, there is
~• evidence of the introduction of historic trade goods and the horse. Sites
of these periods are most likely attributed to Ute and Shoshoni 9rouns
who were known to be in the area at this time.
?n the late 19th century, Euroa^~ericans began settling in the Yampa
Basin. Interaction between American ?nciians and Euroamericans decreased
greatly ;::ter the t9terer hiassacre of li>30. At this time, the Northern
lltes were r~-ovEd to t!,e Uintah Reservation in western Utah.
ED~V I ROPIME~IT
The pr~~jer.t area elevation ranges between 6200 ft. and 7460 ft.
