Sf ~ III IIIIIIIII1111111
999
3.6 Vegetation Information
•
Vegetation inventories were conducted during three successive
growing seasons to characterize the plant communities that occur in
the area. This report utilizes data from all three studies and
concentrates on those areas where surface disturbance is planned to
occur.
3.6.1 Methods
3.6.1.1 Vegetation Communities
The location and extent of each homogenous vegetation type was
determined by photointerpretation and verified in the field.
Communities were selected based on the dominant vegetation present.
After the final community boundaries were mapped, the acreages of
each type were determined using a planimeter.
3.6.1.2 Sampling
Sampling was conducted in 1981, 1982 and 1983 by Mine Reclamation
Consultants, Inc.; Dr. C. Wayne Cook; and Greystone Development
Consultants, Inc., respectively. The sampling points were randomly
selected during all three studies but the sampling methods and the
areas sampled differed somewhat (Appendices 3.6-1 and 3.6-2).
In 1981, Mine Reclamation Consultants sampled the vegetation in the
surface facilities area and on the south side of the Grand Hogback.
Cover was determined by visual estimation in a 1 square meter
(sq.m) plot; production was evaluated by clipping 0.5 sq.m •
NCEC - Coal Ridge #1 3-62 ASC/1145/900301
