~I
%II
i!
Vona Series
The Vona series consists of deep, well-drained, coarse
textured to moderately coarse textured soils on uplands.
These soils are free of ]lartnful salts.
The surface layer is grayish-brown sandy loam about 3
inches thick. It absorbs water readily.
The subsoil is lime-free, brown sandy loam about 25
inches thick. although of the svue textural class as the
surface layer, it contains more clay. Permeability in thi_
layer is moderate to moderately rapid.
The underlying material is limy sandy loam and loam
that was deposited by wind. Plant roots penetrate this
material eltsily.
Vona soils are highly erodible if farmed. The}• are some-
what droughty. The ore nic-matter content is ]ow, The
supply of nitrogen is low, and the supplies of pltosphonts
and potassium are modernte.
These soils are used for 1•ange, for irrigated farming,
and for dryland farllling. The native range plants era
blue grnma, sand dropseed, }•ucca, and forbs. Dfost of the
common crops can be grown under irrigation. Pinto beans,
sorghum, and winter wheat are grown without irrigation.
Representative profile in an Wren of natiTe short-grass
range, 1/2 mile west and 200 feet not•th of the sotttlleast
corner of sec. 23, T. 18 S•, R. 58 N.
91~ to 3 Inches, grayish-bron-n (lOTR 5/2) sandy loom,
dark grayish brown (lOTR 3/2) when moist; weak,
coarse, crumb structure that breaks to weak, 5ne,
crumb; soft when dry, very friable when moist; non-
rnlcereous; clear, smooth boundary.
Bl-3 to G inches, brown (lOYR 5/3) sandy loam, dark Grayish
brown (lOYR 4/2) when moist; moderate, medium,
subangular blocky structure; slightly hard when dry,
very friable when moist; noncalcareous; clear, smooth ,
boundary.
B2t~ to 23 Inches, brown (lOYR 5/3) Leavy sandy loam;
dark brown (lOTR 3/3) when moist; modernte,
medium, subnngulnr blocks structure; hard when dre,
eery friable when malst; thin patchy clay films on
ped surfaces; noncalcnreous; gradual, smooth bouud- ~
ary.
Clca-28 to 35 inches, yellowish-brown (lOTR 5/3) sandy ~
loam, dark yellowish brown (lOTR 4/4) when moist;
massive; Lard when drS, eery friable when moist;
strongly calcareous, with segregated lime as medium-
stzed, soft Croncretions; clear, smooth boundary.
C2ca~5 to 50 i¢ches, Ifght yello~vieh-bron-n (lOTR 8/~) Ionm,
dark brown (IOTR 4/3) when motet; inasstve; slightly
hard when dry, eery triable when moist; strongly
calcareotu; dear, smooth boandnry.
C3~0 to GO inches, light Sellowish-bron'n (SOYR G/4) loamy
fine sand; massive; soft wLen dry, eery friable when
moist; strongly calcareous.
The surface layer is 2 to 12 inches thick. In texture it ranges
from sandy loam to loamy sand. The subsoil is from 12 to 38
inches thick and ranges from brown to light pellon-ish brown
in color. Below the subsoil Is sandy loam, silt loam, loam, or,
1^ places, loamy scrod. TLe depth to lime ranges from 20 to 48
Inches.
Vona soils are nssodated with Tivoli and Olney lolls. They
ore less sandy than Ticoll soils but more sandy than Olney
so{ls. This soil is well suited to corn, grain sorghum, and al-
falfa. Because water intake is raped, irrigation furrows
i _ should be relatively short. Soil nutrients can be lost
through overirrigatlon. Both wind and water erosion are
~.^ .~ hazards. Plowing in fall is not advisable, because wind
~~ ~~~ erosion is a hazard.
