(MAC) of Eagle, Colorado conducted
a Class III cultural resource inventory for Cyprus Empire Corporation of Craig,
Colorado. This study consists of three relocated solid core drill hole
locations. The original locations were reported on in the above referenced
report. The locations are relocated PEDS #1, PEDS #2 and PEDS #10. This study
area is in Moffat County southwest of Craig, Colorado in sections 12 & 14 of
Township 6 North, Range 92 West of the 6th Principal Meridian (Figure 1).
The size of the blocks surveyed around the relocated drill holes was dictated by
the anticipated size of the impact area with a suitable buffer around it. Block
size varied from 0.7 of an acre to 2.4 acres. No additional access was needed
since the accesses to-the original blocks have been cleared in the original
report and any additional new access to the relocations falls within the area
inventoried for each specific drill location. A total of 5.1 acres was surveyed
for this project, of which all was included in the blocks and there was no linear
inventory acreage.
The investigation was conducted on October 20, 1994 by MAC archaeologist
Dulaney Barclay. The project area is located on lands administered by the Bureau
of Land Management, Little Snake Resource .Area. It was performed under BLM
Permit #C39290 which expires 9/22/95. All field notes, photographs and maps are
filed at the MAC office in Eagle, Colorado.
The previous report covered the same environment, file search and statement
of objectives. Since these sections were covered in that report they will not
be reiterated here.
FIELD METHODS
An intensive pedestrian survey methodology was used to conduct this
investigation. The survey blocks of various sizes around the staked drill hole
locations were covered utilizing a series of parallel pedestrian transects walked
at approximately 15 meter intervals. All three relocated drill sites are found
within agricultural fields with around 809e vegetation ground surface coverage.
The vegetation cover was predominantly wheat grasses, thistles and weeds.
Special attention was paid to areas of enhanced subsurface visibility, such as
eroded areas, rodent backdirt piles, road cuts and animal trails.
The size of the blocks around the drill hole locations was dictated by the
anticipated size of the impact area plus a 50 foot buffer. For relocated drill
(sole PEDS #1 a block measuring 350 feet north to south and 300 feet east to west
was inventoried. Distance from the stake to the northern edge the block measures
150' N-S x 300' E-W while the area from the stake south is 200' N-S x 300' E-W.
The extra footage on the southern end of the block was done to cover any new
access that may be needed to reach this area from the original PEDS #1 location.
The original PEDS #1 location had a powerline corridor surveyed along its
northern edge and this corridor ends at the southern edge of the relocated PEDS
#1 block. Acreage inventoried for this location was approximately 2.4 acres.
