FILE MEMO
SLTNNYSIDE GOLD CORPORATION
To: File
From: Larry Perino -Reclamation Manager
Date: June 20, 2003
RE: Permanent Closure of Mayflower Mill Discharge Point
Permit No. CO-0000426, San Juan County
Sunnyside Gold Corporation (SGC) has kept the above referenced permit active in case
accumulation of stormwater and American Tunnel sludge in Tailings Pond #4 filled the
pond and a discharge was necessary to maintain the pond elevation below the maximum
operating level. This has not occurred since 1990 when the Mayflower Mill was still
active.
SGC is no longer operating the American Tunnel water treatment plant and Tailings Pond
#4 is no longer needed to deposit the sludge created during the water treatment process.
Therefore, Tailings Pond #4 will be reclaimed according to the reclamation plan in their
Mined Land Reclamation Permit, M-77-378. The reclamation plan requires contouring of
the surface so water can no longer accumulate and create a pond.
In order to prevent any drainage through the decant pipe in the future, SGC sealed the
intake end with concrete and removed the discharge end valve (two valves were on the
discharge pipe) and pumped approximately five cubic yazds of 4000 psi grout mix up the
10" pipe on June 10, 2003. This is enough to fill approximately 240' of pipe. The valve
was then closed and buried.
The flume which was the CDPS discharge point Outfall-002 was then removed and area
graded.
The discharge system from Tailings Pond #4 has been permanently sealed preventing any
possibility of future discharges.
Pictures of the sealing process aze attached to this file report.
