' Family) . Where the soil is better developed various lichens and
mosses can be found, but on most sites these cryptogams Eire scarce
' or absent .
Cover in this vegetation is highly variable . In excellent
soils (for this site) cover, including cryptogams , reaches 60% to
' 80%. But over most of the vegetation unit cover is in the 15% to
30% range . In small , highly isolated stands the cover is
essentially zero or almost 100%. These rare stands probably relate
to various human induced factors in the history of the site .' About two thirds of the site occupied by this vegetation has cover of
about 15% to about 35%. Thus , grass cover would be characterized as
sparse to moderate .
' MAN-MADE STRUCTURES WITHIN 200 FEET_ The maps included in this
application (Exhibits E-1 and E-2) show the locations of various
man-made structures within 200 feet of the property . Essentially
all valuable structures are to the south of the site . North, west
and east of the site fences are the only structures . Because this
operation will be on the hill above these structures , little
' adverse effect would occur except with heavy runoff . Provisions
are made in the mining plan to control this aspect, so adverse
effects should be none .
WATER RESOURCES :
SURFACE: No surface streams extend through the site . No
' significant , permanent streams occur near enough the site to expect
any adverse effects due to sedimentation. Essentially, -here are
no discretely defined surface water resources on or near the site .
' GROUND: If ground water does occur under this site, it is
probably at considerable depth and far below the depth this pit
will mine . The existing bottom of the pit is very near the final
' elevation of the pit bottom and no ground water has ever been
encountered. This deposit is not usually considered +:o be an
aquifer , at least this near the surface.
WILDLIFE RESOURCES: Wildlife resources in the vicinity of this
operation are probably moderate to abundant, depending upon the
' season. Undoubtedly Mule Deer , Coyote, and various small. mammals
and birds occur throughout the year. Occasionally, Elk might be
found in this area. Black Bear and Puma occur in limited numbers
throughout the Florissant area. The impact of this operation on
' the wildlife resources should be minor to essentially none . This
pit has been in existence a very long time and it is likely that
any adverse impacts of the operation occurred decades ago. It is
' far more likely that continued residential development in this area
is having far more negative impacts on wildlife resources than this
little gravel pit has had or ever will have .
CLIMATE: Climatic conditions are relevant to the revegetation
program. The climate of this site is considered cool , continental ,
' 4
1
