Six sites and four isolated finds were encountered during this investigation. The sites
consist of five prehistoric sites and one historic site. The isolated finds consist of two prehistoric
and two historic ones. Two of the prehistoric sites and the single historic site were previously
recorded during earlier investigations in the area. All of the new sites were found on the terraces
along Fish Creek at the west end of seismic line 9903.
Field conditions at the time of the inventory were generally conducive to locating sites.
Heavy vegetation cover made site discovery somewhat difficult, but was compensated for by
intensively examining disturbed areas as well as areas of enhanced subsurface exposure. There is
potential for undetected, subsurface cultural remains in the deposits along Fish Creek but little
potential elsewhere within the project area given the generally thin nature of the deposits. The
small size of the azea of impact in the higher potential areas greatly limits the potential for
significant impacts to any subsurface cultural remains.
Isolated Find Descriptions
SRT1371: This isolate consists of two stone cairns located in the bottom of aneast-flowing
tributary of Fish Creek near the confluence of two intermittent drainages. There aze high
east/west ridges to the north and south. The vegetation is primarily dense riparian grasses in the
drainage and sparse sagebrush and grasses on the surrounding slopes. A cow path runs between
the two cairns along the base of the slope. The cairns are both fairly large. The one closer to the
stream measures 163 cm NW/SE by 221 cm NE/SW and is about 30 cm in height. It is
constricted of at least 50 large blocky sandstone and vesicular basalt cobbles. The second cairn
is 230 cm to the northwest, closer to the slope. It measures 220 cm NW/SE by 160 cm NE/SW
and is about 20 cm in height. This cairn has a more elongated shape and is constructed of fewer
cobbles that aze the same material and size. The rocks of both cairns have been stacked and a
few rocks from the upper cairn have collapsed slightly downslope. The basal rocks are partially
embedded and no lichen is visible on any of the rocks. Seismic Gne 9902 is located five meters
south of the southern cairn. These appear to be sheepherders cairns and may not exceed 50 yeazs
in age.
SRT1372: This isolate is a bifacially ground and pecked mano of red quartzite. It is located on a
gentle slope at the toe of an eastlwest drainage. A large, steep-sided drainage Ges to the east neaz
the confluence with another, smaller drainage. The rugged hilly area marking the eastern edge of
Twentymile Park is across the drainage to the east and visible in the distance to the west. The
soil is a light yellow brown silty sand that is actively eroding downslope. The mano measures
10.8 cm by 8. I cm by 4.7 cm. It is lightly ground on one side and heavily ground and pecked on
the opposite side. The ends have been severely battered.
SRT 1373: This isolate consists of two secondary chalcedony flakes located on a low ridge
within Twentymile Park. There are steep-sided hills to the east and north and rolling ridges to
the west and south. The soil is a light brown silt with sparse pebbles and gravels. Vegetation
6
