unnecessary compaction and contamination are minimized. In addition,
they are appropriately marked with a conspicuous sign constructed of
durable material. To prevent erosion, each stockpile will be seeded
with rapidly growing cereal grain species or an appropriate
perennial mixture. The topsoil handling plan is shown on Maps tJo.
19 and 20. Topsoil mass balance for the anticipated mine operation
is shown on Tables 2.05-4 and 2.05-5.
The next activity which is conducted is the removal of the
colluvium which lies above the overburden material. This is
accomplished utilizing front end loaders or a hydraulic shovel.
Once this material is loaded into end dump trucks it is hauled to
the backfill area. In addition, because the material is of a
gravel like consistency it is utilized for a road base during
construction of all in pit and out of pit roads. Larger sized
material is also utilized as rip-rap for lining diversion ditches,
• emergency spillways or other areas which potentially may have high
erosional characteristics. The colluvium is removed down to the
overburden which must be drilled and blasted prior to loading and
haulage to the overburden fill area.
Blast hole drilling is completed by overburden drills which typically
drill a 10' x 10' pattern to the top of the first coal seam. GEC
Minerals, Inc. currently utilizes two drills which drill 5 1/8" or
6 1/2" holes. As production increases through 1985, additional
equipment but similar in size and operation will be utilized.
Once a pattern has been drilled on the 100 foot wide bench it is
loaded with Ammonium Nitrate - Fuel Oil Blasting Agent (AN FO) in
preparation for blasting. GEC Minerals, Inc. currently plans to
use AN FO with cast primers and prima cord as the primary means for
fragmentation of the overburden. AN FO in the amount approximately
.6 lbs. per cu, yd. of overburden is planned to be used. An electric
blasting cap is used to detonate the prima cord trunk lines which in
• turn detonate each powder column. Each row of holes is typically
2.05-5
