of 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is moderate. The stony surface <br />layer helps to prevent erosion. Some areas are subject to rare <br />flooding. <br />Haplargids are deep and well drained. These soils are highly variable, <br />and profile development is weak to moderate. In some areas a thin, dark <br />colored surface layer is forming. The surface layer most commonly is <br />loam or sandy loam and is very stony. The subsoil is loam, clay loam, <br />or light clay and has cobbles and stones. Content of rock fragments <br />exceeds 35 percent. <br />Permeability of Haplargids is moderate to moderately slow. Available <br />water capacity is moderate to low rooting depth is 60 inches or more. <br />Surface runoff is medium. The stony surface layer helps to prevent <br />erosion. Some areas are subject to rare flooding. <br />Because of surface stoniness and slope, these soils are unsuited to <br />• crops. Seedbed preparation and drilling of seed for pasture plantings <br />on depleted native range or in cleared areas are generally not practical <br />because surface stoniness. A limited degree of success can be expected <br />by broadcasting seed late in summer or early in fall. Siberian <br />wheatgrass, western wheatgrass, Indian ricegrass, and crested wheatgrass <br />are adapted species. Good pasture management must be practiced to <br />protect the soils from erosion and to provide grazing for livestock. <br />These soild provide habitat for desert cottontail, mourning dove, and <br />chukar. Water developments can be used to improve wildlife habitat. <br />If these soils are used for urban development, the main limitations are <br />stoniness and overflow.
