999
• Doc Date:12/1112001
S Ilc 2.04.4 Cultural and Historical Resources Information
There are no known cultural or historical resources listed or
eligible for listing on the National Register of Historical Places
within the mine plan or adjacent areas. This conclusion is based
on conversations with the Colorado Historical Preservation Office
and the State Archaeological Office. A file search was conducted
by the Colorado State Historical Society and results of that file
search are located in Exhibit 10. In addition, no known archeological
features are present within the area which GEC Minerals, Inc. plans
to mine during the next five years.
The area in which GEC Minerals, Inc. currently conducts mining
operations and plans to continue to mine during the next five years
has been mined by numerous surface and underground mines within the
• last 50 to 60 years. Most of the old operations and the existing
operations within the area are quite small and support only a minor
amount of activity. Access to the coal has been provided primarily
by truck haulage in the recent past. Use of the coal which was
mined during the last 50 to 60 years has been used primarily for
heating purposes or generation of steam for production of electricity.
Fluctuations within the coal market during this long period of time
have caused numerous operations to cease being profitable. However,
since coal has increasing importance to help the country become
energy independent, increased activity is noted within this particular
area. As a consequence, numerous mines are being activated. For
instance, the adjacent Dorchester Colomine Coal and Newlin Creek
Operations are relatively new. It is expected that additional
mining operations will be reactivated within this area to provide
the coal production needs for local heating and electrical generation
as the price of petroleum products increase in the near future.
•
2.04-6
