l
Debris Flows. Some potential for debris flows exists in the drainages of the re-
~• entrants: (1) at the extreme western end in Zone 1, (2) in Zone Sc, and (3) at the eastern
end of the area in Zone 6. Of these areas, the one at the extreme western end probably has
i the highest hazard because the dip slope of the cuesta is toward the drainage and it collects a
larger volume of surface water runoff than either of the other two.
Debris flows can carry soils, rocks, brush and other man-made materials in their
1 paths. The present topography indicates that debris flows from these drainages may reach
the road. The volume of the flows and the distance they move depend on the amount of
water, the velocity of water, the rate of water accumulation and failure mechanism of the
soils. The potential for defining the hazard related to debris flows was beyond the scope of
1 work.
1 •
J
J
J
•
14
