c <br />PURPOSE AND SCOPE <br />This investigative report was prepared for Gibbs & Hill, Inc., <br />to be referenced and used with Snowmass Coal Company's permit <br />applications at the North Thompson Creek Mines in Pitkin County, <br />Colorado. The purpose of this combined field and laboratory <br />investigation was to obtain and develop geochemical data that <br />would assist in the design and in the engineering of a coal-waste <br />impoundment facility at the North Thompson Creek Mines. Specific <br />ob3ectives of this study are threefold <br />(1) to establish present day baseline groundwater quality <br />at the impoundment sites <br />(2) to identify the trace elements that are likely to be <br />solubilized and mobilized from the coal-waste; <br />(3) to assess the capacity of local soils and clays to <br />mitigate trace element migration outwards from the <br />impoundment area. <br /> <br />1 <br />
