designations, and all map unit names as well as recommended soil salvage depths for all •
map units which occur in the projected disturbance area. '
Soil Horizon Nomenclature. Revised soil series profile descriptions were available from
SCS for all soil series and soil series variants mapped on the study area. These revised
descriptions incorporated the new soil horizon nomenclature. This nomenclature was also
used for all 48 soil profile descriptions completed during the PCC East Wadge Extension
soil survey.
Soil Series Correlation. Correlation of site-specific soils with SCS soil series criteria
was completed. All soils, except for Cryor thents and Cryoborolls were associated with
established series and correlated easily. A higher taxonomic classification for the
Cryoborolls/Cryor thents/Rock Outcrop map unit was not possible due to highly variable
physical properties. These soils occur outside of the projected disturbance area.
Detailed descriptions were not prepared and soil samples were not collected from this map
unit, Three series variants, Capo (noncalcareous), Chaperton (coarse-loamy), and Routt
(moderately well to somewhat poorly drained) were mapped within the study area. The
sampled Wineveda profile would also be considered a variant since lab analysis indicates •
it would be placed in the coarse-silty family. No new soil series names were proposed as
part of this survey.
Farmland Determination. The SCS determined that no prime farmland exists in Routt
County because of cold temperatures and a short growing season (SCS, October 1982 and SCS,
1980), A letter from SCS dated 12-19-79 concerning prime farmland is presented on Page
9-2 of Attachment 9-1. PCC therefore request a negative determination for the East Wadge
Extension Area based upon this SCS information which meets CMLRD 2.04,12(2,3) negative
determination requirements.
Mapping Unit Descriptions and Soil Interpretations. Mapping units are depicted by map
symboi, name, and slope percentages in Table 9-6-4, Guide to and Areal Extent of Soil
Mapping Units Identified for the Seneca II Mine East Wadge Extension Baseline Soil Survey,
Routt County, Colorado. The areal extent of each mapping unit in acres is also provided
in Table 9-6-4, Detailed descriptions of each mapping unit are provided in Addendum
9-6-1, Soil Map Unit Characteristics. These descriptions are presented in numerical order
by map unit symbol and include:
•
9-6-19 Revised 05/16/88
