• profile depths (if the entire profile was suitable) across the entire study area based on
numerous soil profile descriptions obtained for each soil type.
A one-lift soil handling operation is recommended for all soil map units within the
projected disturbance area. This method of topsoil removal is desirable within the East
Wad ge Extension area because the sails are either shallow (Splitro) to moderately deep
(Wineveda) and have minimal subsoil profile development (thick, organic-rich "A" horizons
directly overlie sandstone bedrock), landscape slopes are steep to excessive (equipment
mobility and efficiency is severely restricted), mixing will provide a more erosion
resistant and stable seed-bed surface (Skylick), and/or only the "A" horizon is
salvageable (Aaberg, Binco, Buckskin, Gapo, and Routt) due to excessive clay contents in
lower horizons.
These suitability evaluations, based on averages across the study area, were used for
topsoil volume determinations presented in Attachment 9-7. She number of profiles on
which these averages are based is noted in the Soil Profile descriptions range of
characteristics. The recommended topsoil salvage depths for each map unit are weighted
• averages of each major component of the map unit (those listed in the map unit name - for
both consociations and complexes) as well as major soil inclusions as presented within the
map units.
Results/Discussion
Soil Survey Maps. The distribution of each map unit on the Seneca II Mine East Wadge
Extension study area is provided on 1"=400' scale topographic base maps (dated 6-1-BO and
10-9-87) accompanying this report (Exhibit 9-1, sheet 1 of 2 and 2 of 2, respectively).
Map unit boundaries, soil observation sites, and typifying soil pedon sample locations for
the study area were transferred from the 1"=400' scale black and white aerial photo field
base map to the existing Seneca II Mine 1"=400'scale topo base soil map, Exhibit 9-1
(Sheet 1 of 2). Previous SCS Order 2/3 map unit delineations within the Pond OOB study
area were revised as necessary. Exhibit 9-1, Sheet 2 of 2 is provided for the
northeastern part of the study area.
Typifying soil pedons (soil sample locations), as well as all 48 soil profile description
• locations are denoted on Exhibit 9-1. A Soil Profile Descriptions List is provided as
Table 9-6-3. The legend on the maps includes all map unit symbols, soil series
9-6-16 Revised 05/16/88
