gianthyssop) , 0.7~ cover and 19$ frequency, and Lathyrus leucanthus
(aspen peavine), 0.4~ Dover and 17.2 frequency.
The mined brush type/aspen subtype oras the frost productive type studied
with a dry weight production of 1818.9 lbs/acre as compared to 1103.3
lbs/acre for upland sagebrush. The shrub stratum accounted for 75.38
of the total production, while the forbs and grasses accounted for
15.7 arri 9.08, respectively. Snowberry (500.5 lbs/acre), Gambel oak
(250.4 lbs/acre) and sagebrush (241.9 lbs/acre) were the frost productive
shrubs. Of the herbaceous understory, Eriogonum umbellatum var. majus
suffer (suffer wildbuckwheat), 40.2 lbs/acre, nettleleaf gianthyssop,
36.8 lbs/acre, and slender wheatgrass, 28.4 lbs/acre, evidenced the
most productivity. Percent rtoisture content averaged SO.lo for the
grass stratum and 64.90 for the forb stratum.
Average height of shrub species measured in the mixed brush type/aspen
subtype was 178.3 cm. The largest species was Gambel oak with an
average shrub height of 346.3 an follaaed by serviceberry (280.5 ~
and chokecherry (138.7 ctn). Snaabei2y was the smallest shrub species
~• with an average shrub height of 63.0 cm.
Age-height data indicate that the species containing the oldest
individual in the type was Gambel oak (average = 71.4 years ± 10).
The youngest species was snocaberry (average = 9.9 years ± 5). Shrubs
cacrprising the mixed brush type appeared to be older than those in the
upland sagebrush type and younger than those ccmg~rising the aspen
subtype shrub stratum (Table 13).
Aspen Subtype. The aspen vegetation subtype comprised 112 acres or 4.10
of the total lands on the stu3y area. Most of the subtype was located
along south and east facing draws at the upper elevations. The subtype
was characterized by dense stands of aspen averaging 594.5 trees/acre
with a shrub understory cacq~rised mainly of t;nuntain snaaberry, coarmn
chokecherry and Gamhel oak. The herbaceous understory was dominated
by western yarroci, nettleleaf gianthyssop and Kentucky bluegrass.
l~
-57-
